Michelle Lember – Lember and Williams Lawyers

Michelle Lember

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Michelle Lember through networking events and am very pleased she’s agreed to share her expertise with us at the next Professional Parents event on Tuesday 17th April.  She particularly enjoys working with intellectual property and franchising so we will be able to have her answer some of our questions in this area.

Michelle is 35 years old and a lawyer/partner in Lember and Williams Lawyers which has offices in Caboolture and Maleny.  She lives in North Lakes and has two children – Declan is in grade 2 and Carah in grade 1.

Michelle Lember and kids

Before becoming a mum, Michelle says that nothing needed to be done in a hurry, less planning was required and spontaneity was a part of her life.  Now, spontaneity involves the kids and lots of planning and organising is required to keep up with work, plus extras plus school stuff (homework, readers, library books, projects, show and tell etc) and to get free to go to parades and concerts and sports days

Michelle has a really impressive list of qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Economics
  • Bachelor of Law
  • Bachelor of Business Management
  • Masters of Commercial Law
  • Certificates of International Law (Marquette University, Wisconsin, USA)
  • Admitted to practice as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and High Court of Australia
  • Member – Qld Law Society
  • Member – Australian Family Law Practitioners Association
  • Vice President – Commerce Caboolture
  • Board Member – Regional Development Australia – Moreton Bay
  • Board Member – Abbey Museum
  • Secretary – LNP Murrumba Branch
  • Coach – North Lakes Mustangs Under 8s Blue J

I loved Michelle’s response to the question:

Do you find these qualifications/training still relevant now you’ve become a parent?

Yes – for negotiating deals and plea bargains with the kids! They actually say to me now “Mum, lets do a deal”

She certainly works hard with regular weeks requiring about 40 hours in the office with about another 10-15 at home.  Her husband is a butcher by trade, but now employed as a wholesale manager.  He is supportive of her business but can get frustrated with the hours but they work out school pick up and drop off between them – Michelle does  drop off and her husband picks up (he starts work at 2am).  ”We are lucky in that regard to not have to pay for care which is prohibitively expensive and one of my bug-bears”.

Here’s a “typical day” for Michelle:

  • Logging in from home early morning to deal with emails or dictate work
  • School drop off
  • Office work – documents, phone calls, meetings with clients, letters, research
  • Court work
  • Home 5.30-6.30pm
  • Some evening meetings such as Chamber of Commerce

With a converted worker’s cottage as an office, she feels it’s not particularly space efficient but has a homely feel.  It’s also family-friendly with no impositions on staff’s out of hours time, no need for apologies of making it up if kids are sick.

Something Michelle loves about her work is the freedom to be at sports days and easter hat parades and not have to ask for leave or apologise for being out of the office.  She also likes to set an example to her childre re the need to have goals and work hard towards them. They don’t consider that they is anything they can’t do.

Here’s a few more questions I asked Michelle in this email interview:

How did you come to run your own business?

I worked for a practice as an employed solicitor for 2 years, then purchased the interest of Gail Maskiell upon her retirement

What surprised you about becoming a parent?

  • Working mother’s guilt
  • Reliance upon grandparents
  • The friendship between you and your children

Anything unexpected about running a business?

  • Isolation.
  • Battling mis-perceptions (of wealth, that things are easy for you etc etc).

Greatest wishes for your children and business?

Success would mean getting both to a point where they want me a round but no longer need me.

Recent moments you are most proud of?

  • Five Star Dance Academy Opening
  • Family Law results – child safety matters

Biggest challenges?

Work-life balance especially when under-staffed at work

What do you think is a myth about being a working parent?

That you are lazy/not ambitious/not serious about your career if you are a working parent, or conversely that you aren’t maternal if you work after you have had children (yes I have been accused of all of the above!)

Advice to those starting out in business?

Don’t do it because you think it will be easier than employed work.  It wont be.  That doesn’t mean it isn’t going to be worth it in a qualitative sense.

 Some of your favourite resources:

Some favourite Professional Parents businesses or organisations?

And finally, do you have some tips for work family balance?

  • Mobile phone to silent when you get home – especially if you receive emails to it. If you need to work from home try to go it after the kids have gone to bed, or in the morning before they get up.
  • Don’t get into the habit of being available 24/7 and promising amazing deadlines.
  • The house can be cleaned later.
A huge thank you to Michelle not just for her time in taking part in this interview but offering to come along to our Professional Parents event next Tuesday 17th April.   You can RSVP via the Facebook “events” tab on the Professional Parents Brisbane Facebook page.  In the 2 years since I started Professional Parents, I’ve heard several stories of issues with IP and Trademarking and this is an area many of us would like to know more about.  Come along to hear a short presentation by Michelle and ask her some questions.

Alli Price – Motivating Mum

Alli PriceAlli Price has got her business name down pat…she really is a Motivating Mum.  Though I’ve only had the pleasure of talking to her once or twice on the phone before, and have had a lot less time that I would like available to engage with the Motivating Mum Facebook page and website, through what I have seen, I have found Alli an inspiration and look forward to getting to know her better.

A certified professional life coach (ahhh now I understand the great inspiration!), she’s based in Melbourne, pictured here with her cute girls Amelie, 5 and Freya, 1 (nearly 2) and has run her business for 5 years.

How did you come to start your own business?

I was sitting at home one day on my own, looking after bub and trying to run my coaching business. It was so lonely and a little depressing so I decided to start the Businessmums’ Networking Lunches – in an attempt to get out and get some intelligent conversation and also expand my network. It turned out there were a lot of mums at home feeling just as I was!

What was life like “before children”?

Never out of bed before ten, worked as a waitress, living in London and travelled the world at will, stayed out late and saw loads of friends!

Compared with life “after children?”

Still try to stay in bed as late as possible but am losing that battle, still up late (usually 12am) but it’s because I’m typing like a maniac. Have never worked so hard and so constantly in my life. Furthest I get from home are the playgrounds but am finding my fulfillment in my beautiful girls (well, most of the time) and running a business where I get to feel amazing every day as I’m helping people.

Do you find your previous qualifications relevant to your life now?

I find the qualifications so relevant as my coaching course taught me so many amazing coping techniques, taught me how to listen and ask great questions and also challenged me to work out what was most important to me.

How many hours a week do you work?

Every single second I’m not looking after kids, doing housework – easily 30 – 40 a week

What was one of the most unexpected things about becoming a parent?

How natural I would be at it. I was never maternal and had no experience with young kids (aside from a little babysitting) so I was quite happy at how well I eased in to it.

Did anything surprise you about starting a business?

Just how much I would love it – there is nothing else I would rather be doing in the world!

What are your greatest wishes for your children and your business?

My greatest wish for my children is that they follow their hearts and lead adventurous and fantastical lives. My greatest wish for my business is that it continues to grow (possibly to other countries in addition to Oz and the UK) so that I can continue helping mums everywhere.

A recent moment you are most proud of?

Selling out my Mummy Mentoring Festival (where high profile women in business donate phone mentoring sessions for regular mums to buy) in 4 hours and making $1 200 for a new charity, Support for Mums.

A challenge you are tackling?

Slowing down. I am very spontaneous and if I have what I feel is a great idea, I will have it implemented in days. I have been trying to slow down and schedule implementation of these ideas to ensure I don’t burn out!

Advice for others starting out in business?

Starting a business is not a quick fix if you need to make money quickly, it can take a long time to start earning. Read as much as you can – blogs, newsletters, articles – try and learn one thing a day. Before starting in social media, Google the etiquette of how to interact.

What is one of your favourite resources?

I love the workbook The Artists Way – it is amazing if you’re trying to work out what you want to do with life, encouraging your creativity and also for just stopping and appreciating life while it speeds by.

What type of work does your partner do?

He’s a kids soccer coach.

Is your partner & family supportive of your business?

My boyfriend is fabulously supportive and very interested in what I do. Even my 5 year old daughter talks about what I do and answers the phone for me.

Can you share a favourite Professional Parents business?

Picking a business is like picking a fave child – can’t be done!

Describe your office…

I have a desk nestled in a huge window in the lounge room which makes it lovely, light and bright. I am looking forward to the day I can have all my things on my desk and a plant but my 2 year old jut pulls everything down so it’s pretty sparse.

Describe a typical day…

Working from the minute I get up to the minute I go to bed: breakfast, oldest to school, depending on the day a mix of housework, lunch, sending emails, looking after bubs, school pick up, dinner, bath, bed, back to the computer while watching TV and then bed about 12am!

What do you love most about being in business?

I love being able to be home for my kids, take them to activities, hear their stories. I also love the opportunity to build something that is mine, to be creative, to continually learn. I also love being able to build something that helps people who need it, as opposed to working and making money for a big company that already has more than enough money.

What do you think is a myth about being in business?

A myth about mums in business that constantly annoys me is that we’re all home making bibs. People constantly underestimate the experience, skill, intelligence, creativity and passion that mums in biz possess.

Do your children go to school/daycare/childminding?

My 5 year old is in preps (am still getting used to the new routine) and my 2 year old is in Nursery 2 days a week – yays!

One of the many great support services Motivating Mum offers is a phone mentoring session with established mums in business for a really affordable $28 for 30 min.  Alli has brought together a really impressive list of Business Mentors with a wide range of skills: www.motivatingmum.com/mentoring-mum

Lisa Boyle: MyPublicRelationsMentor.com

Lisa BoyleToday I have the pleasure of introducing Lisa Boyle of MyPublicRelationsMentor.com (and Inform Marketing and Public Relations).  Mum to three girls (aged 7, 5 and 1), I first met Lisa when she came along to a Professional Parents event last year.  It became clear very quickly that many of us who attend PP events are keen to learn how to obtain free media coverage for our business…and being Lisa’s area of expertise I have asked her to be the guest speaker on 7th February for our North Brisbane Business Brainstorming session.

Here’s my email interview with Lisa…

How long have you been in business?

I started Inform, my full-service marketing and public relations consultancy, in 2005 and planning MyPublicRelationsMentor.com since 2009 – launching the website in 2011.

How did you come to start your own business?

I wanted a better way to balance my family life (that is, raising children) with working at what I’m passionate about – marketing and public relations.

Description of “life before children”…

Life before children was all about my corporate job, professional development, inner-city living, going out a lot with friends, visiting family, and travel.  I gained a Bachelor of Business, with a major in Marketing (and Public Relations) from QUT.

How does this compare to “life after children?”

Life after children is now all about children, family, running my business, living in the suburbs, going to kids activities, and much more time with family.  I found the degree was useful in setting up my own business.

Approximately how many hours do you work each week?

This varies depending on workload, but generally I like to keep it to 21 hours per week.

Tips for family work balance:

Plan how you use your time as much as you can – that is, when you work, play with children, manage your house, etc. Be flexible.

What is one of your favourite services that your business offers?

My favourite service is identifying marketing and PR opportunities for other businesses.

What was one of the most unexpected things about becoming a parent?

How much I love my children and how much fun we have together.

What was one of the most unexpected things about starting a business?

The amount of work I have got through word of mouth.

What is one of your greatest wishes for your children?

That they are healthy and happy.

And for your business?

To earn a reasonable income from helping others to promote their businesses and achieve success.

A recent moment you are most proud of?

Creating the website for MyPublicRelationsMentor.com which is the online arm of my consulting business Inform Marketing and Public Relations.

A recent challenge?

Achieving the balance between family and work.

Any advise to others in business?

Stay focused, plan it, do it.

A favourite resource?

It’s hard to pin-point one favourite, but in the past few days I have just started following SuziDafnis on twitter and I’m really enjoying her tweets (which usually link to an article on her website).

Is your partner supportive of your business?

Yes, my husband and partner are supportive of my business, although when I have a big project on and my kids see all the publicity and marketing collateral of my clients they start to complain that ‘it’s everywhere’.

Some favourite Professional Parents businesses?

My favourite PP businesses are Professional Parents itself, Be a fun mum and Brisbane Kids.

Describe your office:

My office looks out over my backyard and I can hear the birds chirping, but it really needs to be tidied up.

What do you love about being in business?

The freedom, flexibility and intellectual stimulation.

What do you think is a myth about being in business?

I think a big myth about being a working parent in business is that it is easy (or maybe I was the only one thinking that).

Leanne Francia: Sunshine Coast Kid’s Club

Leanne FranciaIt’s my pleasure to introduct  Leanne Francia, owner of Sunshine Coast Kid’s Club and her two beautiful daughters, Olivia (10) and Audrey (9).

Leanne and I have both been in the same Sunshine Coast Mastermind group for around a year now but due to us both having other commitments and not able to attend on the same days it wasn’t until recently that we finally met face to face.  I immediately loved her intelligence, energy, openness and obvious desire to support and bring joy to children and other adults.

I’m very excited to be working with Leanne to create programmes to offer those attending the Sunshine Coast Professional Parents events and will share more details soon.  The things she has planned sound like so much fun!  Meanwhile here’s an opportunity to get to know Leanne a little better…

Her description of how she came to start the Sunshine Coast Kid’s Club:

This is my own business that I started in 2010.  After unexpectedly becoming a single parent a few years ago I found it a challenge to find work that had the flexibility I now needed in order to care for my daughters on my own.  I needed a business that gave me the option of bringing my children to work with me. I also wanted to create the support and flexibility for others who are caring for children in being able to network with each other whether in business or as parents, or just to all get out and enjoy family friendly events and outings together. And so the Sunshine Coast’s first mobile Kid’s Club was born. I work closely with local businesses, professional groups, shopping centres and families to create family friendly events that become ‘memorable and not just a memory.”

What was life like “before children”?

I studied towards  an Associate Degree in Law, Mortgage Broker Licence, Real Estate Principal’s Licence and was mainly involved in real estate, buying, building, renovating and developing property.  I also set up and managed a Conveyancing Practice in NSW.

 And life “after children?”

Irrecognisable from life before children!  Apart from starting the Sunshine Coast Kid’s Club, I have been a Life Coach with Australian Depression Institute and am currently studying a Psychology Degree full time at University of the Sunshine Coast.

One of the most unexpected things about being a parent?

That I would be a single parent.

Any tips for family work balance?

Firstly whatever time it is you have with your children if it is 2 minutes or 2 hours make it quality time. Get down on the floor and be in their world with them and have fun enjoying the moment. Secondly laugh often.

One of the most unexpected things about starting a business?

The high quality of people and relationships that would be built through the experience.

Greatest wish for your children?

That they will always be supported with wisdom, love and joy as they grow and create their own life journey.

Greatest wish for your business?

To bring joy to every child that attends events I am involved in.

A moment you’re most proud of in the last few months?

I got my motorcycle licence and went for my first trail bike ride in the bush and stayed on the whole time!

One of your biggest recent challenges?

Find a routine and my feet with my studies at University.

Advice for those starting out in business?

Seek out a mentor, check in with them regularly and be accountable to them with your business plan.

A favourite resource to share?

“Women Who Run with the Wolves” – Clarissa Pinkola Estees.

What’s your office like?

Mobile – wherever the children and events are – and there is a small space in my lounge room (although that space is probably just as mobile in our little home)!

A typical day for you…

Does not exist.

What do you love about being in business?

Learning and growth that comes from creating and seeing what works and what doesn’t.

What have you found to be a myth about being in business?

That you can do it alone.

One of your favourite services that your business offers?

Has probably been the Italian pizza and craft nights. The children make their own pizzas and while they are cooking we do some Italian craft together. Mum or dad get to enjoy a drink and conversation and everyone goes home having had fun and with a full tummy.

Sunshine Coast Kids Club Logo

A huge happy birthday to Leanne, she just turned 40 last week…and as us mums know you don’t always get to celebrate as planned.  Leanne had received a great gift to be up in a hot air balloon for her birthday but instead was at home in quarantine as one of her daughters came down with chicken pox.  She faced it as a wonderful mum though and I am sure she’ll be soaring high very soon – both physically and metaphorically!

Emma Monro: The WAHM Weekly

Emma MonroBefore Christmas, I had a lovely phone conversation with  Emma Monro who had recently launched The WAHM Weekly (it’s now 3 months old).  She has an exciting programme of weekly Webinars on a Friday evening to help other WAHMs (Work At Home Mums) network, learn and achieve.  She’s Brisbane-based and pictured here with daughter, Ruby, 18 months.

Emma explains how she started her own business:

After consulting with ‘normal’ business’ for so long, I missed the events, networking and educational opportunities that I once had access to. I also know how important it is to do these activities on a regular basis. And so I created The WAHM Weekly in September 2011. I am passionate about bringing Live Web Events which will inspire, educate and help you build your business.

A brief description of life before children:

I continue to run my property business from BC.  I was also a Business Consultant with Bartercard for 10 years.

How does this compare to life “after children”:

A lot more peaceful with the same amount of excitement and passion for small business.

Approximately how many hours a week do you work?

25 hours

A tip for family work balance:

Use a goal board to plan your activity.  Have it in an easily viewed place where the whole family can have imput and use it to inspire each other.

What was one of the most unexpected things about becoming a parent?

The amount of day sleep they had and how much I miss the freedom of the day sleeps now they are diminishing.

What is a moment you have been proud of in the last few months?

The fantastic feedback I have received about every one of the web events I have hosted.

What is one of your biggest challenges of the last few months?

Working on my marriage while starting a new business and having a husband who works 80+ hours a week (as a lawyer)

What advice can you give others just starting out in business?

Be action orientated and ignore the fear

What do you love most about being in business?

Freedom

What do you think is a myth about being in business?

That it is all about ‘doing coffee’ and swanning about in Lorna Jane gear.

Does your child go to daycare?

Not yet, we are on a waitlist.  Soon for 3 days a week.

Soraya Bews – Child Talk

I’m delighted to introduce Soraya Bews of Child Talk.  Based in North Brisbane, she’s pictured above with her beautiful family including Zade, 4 yrs and Cailie, 1 year

Soraya started Child Talk in 2009 and describes her inspiration:

When I was on maternity leave with my first child I was looking for a project to keep me mentally stimulated at home and decided to create Child Talk. As a Speech Pathologist, I had always had a special area of interest in early language development and preventive therapy by empowering parents to stimulate language. Also, I had noticed resources for parents about all aspects of baby care but not about early language which is so critical for literacy development and academic and social success. So, put all that together and how could I not start my business??

Her description of “life before children”:

Life before children was all about me and my husband of course. We enjoyed eating out regularly in fine dining restaurants, we travelled to South America and within Australia. We were both full time professionals who did what we wanted when we wanted. It was wonderful! The thing I miss the most though is sleeping in until my body was ready to wake up itself!

Soraya holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology) and Master of Heath Administration.   She finds these qualifications have been a big help in her role as a parent.

“My Speech Pathology background has been invaluable in stimulating my children’s development and not just in the area of language. During my working life, I worked with Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists and learned about gross motor, fine motor and behaviour management skills (although the latter is harder with my own kids than other people’s ;0))”

One of the most unexpected things about becoming a parent and starting a business is the same: How relentless it is

Do your children go to daycare?

Zade (4) goes 3 days/week and Cailie (1) is 2 days/week with an additional day with grandparents

Greatest wishes for your children and business?

For my children to know their passions and pursue them with enthusiasm and confidence. For my business to be financially successful while helping future generations of Australians get the best start to life.

One of your biggest challenges recently?

Managing my 4 year old’s behaviour.

A favourite resource?

The book The Passion Test by Janet and Chris Attwood

A recent proud moment?

To be asked by Pinky McKay to be a guest speaker in a teleseminar series she is producing.

Advice she would give to others just starting out in business

Commit yourself wholeheartedly and don’t give up.

One of the things you love most about being in business?

Getting the satisfaction of shaping something from nothing.

What do you think is a myth about being in business?

It all comes easily and quickly

Tip for Family Work Balance

It is an individual call. If you feel right about your balance despite the break down of hours then it is right for you.

Take a look at the Child Talk website and Facebook page for the Child Talk: Strategies for Stimulating your Child’s Language DVD/Workbook and parent talks about the importance of early language and future literacy/academic success.

Soraya is kindly offering a discount to readers of this blog, email info@childtalk.com.au and quote “Professional Parents” before the end of September 2011 to buy a copy of Child Talk: Strategies for stimulating your Child’s Language for $20 + P+H (instead of $24.95).

Interview by Renee Veldman-Tentori, renee@zestee.com.au

Rachel and Lia: Toddler Tints

I  recently wrote a blog post about the Huggies MumInspired Grants and am delighted to have the opportunity to interview winners of one of the five grants, Lia Tonich & Rachel Cordina of  toddler tintstm

Both aged 32 and based in Perth, Lia is mum to Maximus (just turned 2) and Rachel has two boys, Thomas (3) and Oscar (19 months)

They started their business around 6 months ago.  Lia has a Bachelor of Psychology and is a qualified Naturopath. Before becoming a mum she owned and ran her own naturopathic clinic. Rachel is a primary school teacher predominantly teaching Year one and two.In their own words, this is how they came to begin toddler tints.

“The inspiration for our toddler tintstm was born out of frustration for the car shades currently on offer. Between the two of us we had been through five different types of shades in a couple of years. Finding something that fit perfectly, covered the whole window and didn’t fade and stretch in the sun was impossible. We were also concerned about safety as many shades create a blind spot because you can’t see through them. We were both convinced there had to be a better option. We were inspired by the advertising film used on buses – you could see the advertising from the outside but not from the inside. We thought, let’s reverse that! We tracked down a supplier, got a great design made up and six months later have launched the toddler tintstm product.”

Since having children Lia has been a full time stay at home mum and Rachel was  working one day a week so far this year.  Now with toddler tintstm  up and running they say they are still learning to juggle our business and family life.  Their working hours vary depending on orders and commitments with our children.  Every day is different and both mums love having the flexibility to work around their children’s needs.

One tip Lia and Rachel give for aiming to achieve better work life balance is to try to allocate separate time for work and children so that you can give each your 100% attention.

Some of the unexpected surprises when starting up a business for the duo were the amount of time involved, the start up costs and the amount of research that goes into product development but found the Small Business Development Centre Perth was a great resource to turn to.  Even if you’re not in Perth, there are some great online tools and information on this website.  Both also have supportive partners who are involved in the business, and grandparents who help out with the children (who do not yet attend daycare or school).

The advice they give to others starting out in business:

“If you are thinking of starting your own business, passion for your idea or product will go a long way in helping you get through the challenge of the set up phase. We have found that having each other has been great for support and encouragement, so a partner is a huge help! Thorough research is really important. Search the web and shops to help you decide if there is a market for your product and get feedback from friends.”

Lia and Rachel are proud of winning the Huggies ‘MumInspired’ competition – and so they should be, well done and wishing you every success.

You can purchase toddler tints on their website and follow them on their facebook page.

Danielle: La Di Dah Handmade Creations

Today I’d like to introduce Danielle Pamenter from La Di Dah Handmade Creations, who is mum to Brody (4) and Ashton (2.5) and based in beautiful Buderim on the Sunshine Coast.   I had the pleasure of meeting her at the Sunshine Coast Marketing Between Markets workshop with Mamma’s Market earlier this year.  She started La Di Dah at the end of September 2010 and uses gorgeous fabrics and ribbons to create fabric memory boards which are useful for storing and displaying everything from photos to bills.  They can be custom made to suit your decor and would be a beautiful addition to any room, and are very reasonably priced.  I had a wonderful time browsing the beautiful boards on both her Facebook and Madeit pages, I love the option of adding in your child’s name.

Danielle is kindly offering a special for our readers – order before 30 June 2011 and mention “Professional Parents Profile” to save 10% off any order.  Facebook orders only.

Here is our email interview to get to know Danielle, her beautiful family and her business better:

HOW DID YOU COME TO CREATE YOUR BUSINESS?  La Di Dah first was created when I started to handcraft items for my own home.  I was very excited to find that my products were original and unique which then encouraged me to begin the business facebook journey.  La Di Dah was a great ‘outlet’, for a stay at home mother of 2 boys, to have some ‘work’ time!  Not only creating a business of my very own but having a ‘purpose’ and it was important for me to feel like a providing a little ‘cash flow’ for my family.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF “LIFE BEFORE CHILDREN: I worked  as qualified Child Care Group Leader and myself and partner at the time (now husband) were living in a small unit. We were busy with working as well as enjoying weekends of relaxing and ‘doing whatever we pleased!’

HOW DOES THIS COMPARE TO “LIFE AFTER CHILDREN”?  From a working perspective; Child Care is a high pace high demand job and going back to a full time position in this field just didnt feel right.  Minding other children, then coming home to my own family wasnt on my list of priorities.  So staying at home was a big change.  Myself and Ryan stuck to a one wage family income which proved to be tricky at the best of times as well as ‘me time’ being a very special moment.  As much as I LOVED being a mother; being stuck at home as a labelled ‘house wife’ for 3.5 years, just wasnt for me!!

APPROXIMATELY HOW MANY HOURS A WEEK DO YOU WORK? Weeks vary depending on whether I have markets on or custom orders.  Night times as well as my tuesday when my boys both go to childcare are my ‘creating times.’

ONE OR TWO TIPS FOR WORK LIFE BALANCE: I try not to do any ‘work’ on our ‘at home with Mummy days’ as I feel the purpose of having my own business is to create my own flexible hours to suit not only myself but my children and husband.

WHAT ARE ONE OR TWO OF YOUR FAVOURITE PRODUCTS (OR SERVICES)  I love using my gorgeous fabrics, ribbons etc to create La Di Dah Fabric Memory Boards.  I also love creating custom orders too;  gives me a chance to work one on one with a client, create a relationship (even if its over emails) and stick to a challenge to create something personal.

ANY PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS OR TRAINING YOU’D LIKE TO MENTION? DO YOU FIND THESE QUALIFICATIONS/TRAINING STILL RELEVANT NOW YOU’VE BECOME A PARENT? My qualification is:  Diploma of Community Services, Children’s Services.  (Group Leader in Child Care) so in many ways this has helped me as a parent, from being patient to ideas and strategies!

WHAT WAS ONE OF THE MOST UNEXPECTED THINGS ABOUT BECOMING A PARENT? Becoming a first time parent was a very exciting time as well as life changing.  Being a parent is more than a full time job, as sometimes labelled; its a full time multi-tasking job (cleaner, carer, doctor, organiser, cooker, shopper (for groceries), mediator, planner and of course the list goes on!  But one thing I didnt expect was to ‘go on with life’ on 2-4 hours of broken sleep a night!  This has made me (what I believe) a strong person, physically and mentally.

WHAT WAS ONE OF THE MOST UNEXPECTED THINGS ABOUT STARTING A BUSINESS? That La Di Dah actually worked; and grew.  It was a successful as well as my handcrafted items being loved by so many customers.  La Di Dah was all just a bit of a tester for me and I love what its become

WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR GREATEST WISHES FOR YOUR CHILDREN? To always provide a loving and nurturing environment for them and their development and to be able to help them experience life to the fullest by making them aware of all the positives instead of so much negative and be grateful for all that we have.

AND YOUR BUSINESS? To continue to grow and create.  And hopefully sell in stores/shops.

ONE OF THE MOMENTS YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS? My Family and I went to Fiji recently and visited a very remote village (infact the last traditional village who still live in grass huts ‘bure’).  This moment is something that ill treasure for ever!!  It made me very proud of my family and country as well as extremely grateful.  It has not only impacted life within my family but impacted my La Di Dah tactics and the reason I want my La Di Dah business to strive;  enjoy every moment that the business gives and be grateful that I am able to create for my own business within my own time.  Enjoy meeting customers and other people in the same position as well as being confident.

ONE OF YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS? Being confident enough to step into more market based promoting and selling

WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO OTHERS JUST STARTING OUT IN BUSINESS? Be confident is a must.  Also believe in your product and love what you are doing :)

SHARE ONE OF YOUR FAVOURITE RESOURCES (WEBSITE, BOOK ETC) Funky Fabrix (where i purchase alot of my fabrics)

WHAT KIND OF WORK DOES YOUR PARTNER DO? Ryan is a carpenter.

IS YOUR PARTNER & FAMILY SUPPORTIVE OF YOUR BUSINESS? Very supportive.  My husband is more than happy to have ‘boys days’ when im out at markets and I have my Mum and sometimes friends who come along with me to markets for moral support

ONE OR TWO OF YOUR FAVOURITE PROFESSIONAL PARENTS BUSINESSES:  I think Erin from Sunshine Coast Work at Home Mums has built a fantastic business and resource for businesses on the Sunshine Coast.  I also think the Ash Hoyle from Mm is for Me does a fantastic multi-tasking job;  i love reading her blog!

DESCRIBE YOUR OFFICE.  Our office/study was an organised mess up until recently with the fantastic work of my husband building shelving for all my La Di Dah fabrics and bits n pieces.  I love stepping into the ‘la di dah room’ and looking at it!!

DESCRIBE A TYPICAL DAY – OR DO YOU NOT HAVE ONE? Every day is different.  We have the normal breakfast, lunch and dinner routines although like to just take things as they come and not be so structured as such.  We enjoy catching up with people, going to the beach, and chilling out at home!!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING IN BUSINESS (OR BEING A WORKING PARENT) Flexibility and being able to create my own items and sell them to people;  makes me grateful and very proud.

DO YOUR CHILDREN GO TO SCHOOL/DAYCARE/ALTERNATE CHILDMINDING? HOW OFTEN? Yes,  Brody and Ashton both attend daycare on a tuesday then monday Ashton goes and Wednesday Brody goes.  This gives me a chance to be able to spend one on one time with them; which is soooo lucky and I really enjoy!!

A huge thanks to Danielle for sharing her time and her talent, I’ve really enjoyed getting to know you better.

Erin Law: SCWAHMS

Erin Law is a remarkable woman who shares my passion for bringing together working parents to support each other. She launched SCWAHMS (Sunshine Coast Work At Home Mums) just six months ago, and her website, directory and monthly morning teas have already become a great success.

Her Facebook page describes her philosophy:  “SCWAHMS is a place for Local WAHMS to come and support each other, share advice, and save some time and money on things we need! It is also a great resource for locals – support a WAHM, and in turn help the community by keeping our money here!”

Based in Caloundra and pictured with her two gorgeous girls Cooper (almost 5) and Bailey (almost 3), she is celebrating her 26th birthday next week – happy birthday Erin!  I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Erin at a Mamma’s Market (where she had a stand for her “other business “Piccolo Amico and we’ve chatted a few times on Facebook and the phone.  I’m very pleased to have the chance to share this interview so you can also get to know this energetic mum better.  I particularly love her answer to how many hours she works a week below, and her honesty with the unexpected side of becoming a parent – I’m sure many of us can identify.

Erin describes her office in one word – “messy” – but despite this she comes across as a very organised businesswoman.  Her partner is a personal trainer/motivational speaker so I wonder if this contributes to her success!  Cooper is at Prep and Bailey is in daycare 2 days a week, giving her some time to be able to focus on growing her business.  She also says her partner and family are very supportive, and I remember in a recent conversation asking her about her great media coverage, right from the launch of her business.  She responded that her mum gave her great encouragement to contact various media outlets, and I think all of us parents in business can learn from this approach.  Though PR doesn’t always work this way for everyone, she suggests that anyone just starting out in business should “be proactive in promoting yourself” and I think this is great advice, and if you’re lucky, can have amazing results. Erin has already been on local tv news and was also featured recently in the beautiful Profile Magazine (you can read that article online here.)

Here are a few more of Erin’s answers from our email interview…haven’t edited this section as I like how her sense of humour and openness comes across well – and we also share the same enthusiasm in the use of exclamation marks!!!

Is this your own business or are you an employee?

Mine , mine, all mine! Muahahahah!

How did you come to start SCWAHMS?

I saw the need for a “one stop shop”  to help locals find all the best WAHM businesses, and support them!

What was life like “before children”?

Worked in Admin in a car yard, but was waiting for my “Mummy Life” to begin!

How does this compare to life “after children”?

Vast difference, but wouldn’t trade it!

What was one of the most unexpected things about becoming a parent?

Disliking it immensely at times!

Approximately how many hours do you work a week?

A bazillion!

Work Life Balance Tip:

Schedule your time, and try to stick to it!

A few of her favourite Professional Parents businesses and products?

LOVE LOVE LOVE “Design a Cupcake” Cakes, and “Natural Babycare”’s range of “Sniff This” Bath stuff, Mm Is For Me and La Di Dah Creations.

A favourite resource?

The lovely Donna Hamer from Simple Online Solutions.

Erin has also reminded us you can subscribe to the SCWAHMS Newsletter via www.scwahms.com/newsletters.php for the chance to win at $20 credit with the SCWAHMS of your choice.

So if you’re a mum in business on the Sunshine Coast and not yet been to her monthly morning teas, make sure you schedule it in.  Unfortunately I work in Brisbane on Thursdays and really disappointed I can’t be there myself but certainly looks like a wonderful way to spend a morning and I’ve had great feedback from friends.

A huge thanks to Erin for sharing her time, and part of her life with us.   Again wishing you a wonderful birthday next week – thanks for all your support of Work at Home Mums.  I’m sure you have a bright future ahead!
